Cruising from the US into Canada is one of the great perks of Great Lakes boating, and it is genuinely easy once you know the drill. Before you go
- Valid passports for everyone aboard.
- Proof of boat ownership and registration or documentation.
- Know your vessel details: length, HIN, and registration numbers.
- Consider a NEXUS card for faster reporting if you cross often.
Reporting into Canada
When you arrive, report to the Canada Border Services Agency before anyone but the operator steps ashore. Have your documents ready and know the rules on alcohol, tobacco, and especially firearms, which are tightly restricted.
Coming home
Returning to the US, you report to Customs and Border Protection, often through an approved reporting option such as the CBP ROAM app.
