Cruising to Canada by Boat: The Paperwork, Simplified

Cruising from the US into Canada is one of the great perks of Great Lakes boating, and it is genuinely easy once you know the drill. Most of the stress comes from paperwork surprises, not the crossing itself. Here is the simplified version. Always confirm the current requirements with official sources before you leave, since border rules change.

Before you go

• Valid passports for everyone aboard.
• Proof of boat ownership and registration or documentation.
• Know your vessel’s details: length, HIN, and registration numbers.
• Consider a NEXUS card for faster reporting if you cross often.

Reporting into Canada

When you arrive, you must report to the Canada Border Services Agency before anyone but the operator steps ashore. Have your documents ready and follow the current CBSA small-vessel reporting process. Declare anything you are required to, and know the rules on alcohol, tobacco, and especially firearms, which are tightly restricted.

Coming home

Returning to the US, you report to Customs and Border Protection, often through an approved reporting option such as the CBP ROAM app. Keep your documents handy and be ready to declare purchases and anything you brought back.
